Speedsters Shine On Day 1 at MIAC Indoor Meet
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (2/23/24)---The Cobber speedsters led the way on Day 1 at the MIAC Indoor Championship Meet. Concordia received 17 of their 26.50 team points on Friday from athletes in the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles.
The Cobbers finished Friday with 39.50 team points, which is sixth in the team standings.
The redemption story of Day 1 belonged to junior Jenna Kalevik, who broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles, one day after teammate Peyton Selle edged her for the record by .01 of a second during the pentathlon on Thursday.
Kalevik posted a time of 9.25 in the event in the pentathlon but was bettered by Selle's 9.24, which broke the 24-year-old program record in the event. Kalevik made sure that wouldn't happen again on Friday when she sprinted to a time of 9.21 in the finals of the overall meet and placed second in the event.
Kalevik qualified for the finals with Selle in a time of 9.26. Selle, the 3-time pentathlon champion, qualified with a mark of 9.34. The two runners squared off one last time in the finals with Kaevik breaking Selle's day-old record by crossing the line in 9.21. Selle placed fifth in the finals by pulling a "Logan Clark" and posting an identical time of 9.34.
The other finals Cobber double-up belonged to the tandem of sophomore Emily Rengo and first-year athlete Lydia Fynboh. The pair qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash by clocking times of 7.98 and 8.05.
Rengo, who tied the school record in the 60 meters last weekend, proceeded to come home in 8.01 in the finals which was good for sixth place. Fynboh was right behind at 8.06 and placed seventh.
The other Cobber team points on Friday were scored by Kyla Nygaard, the hurdles bestie duo of Selle and Kalevik, Brooke Kangas and the distance medley relay team.
Nygaard earned a 7th-place finish in the 400 meters when she recorded a time of 1:00.26. That time was only .22 of a second away from a Top 5 finish.
Selle and Kalevik doubled their point-scoring finishes in the pentathlon by posting Top 8 finishes in the high jump. Both Cobbers posted a top height of 4-10.50, but Selle placed in a tie for fifth and Kalevik was seventh due to the number of misses at lower heights.
Kangas, seeded 11th heading into the meet, placed eighth in the weight throw. She recorded a career-best distance of 46-10.75 on her second attempt of the day.
Concordia's DMR quartet of Elsie Hatlevig, Emily Larsen, Londyn Ames and Amelia Rowley ran a season-best time of 13:31.38 and finished eighth in the event.
