NCAA Meet Battle Finishes Senior Season

LA CROSSE, Wis. (5/26/18)---Senior Bailey Hovland fought off sickness and finished 17th in the hammer throw in her very first NCAA Division III Outdoor Championship Meet experience.

Hovland, who earned a spot at the national meet by breaking the conference record at the MIAC Meet, came down with stomach flu-like symptoms on Thursday and spent the last two days trying to recover from the ailment.

Hovland was able to get in a practice session late on Friday to prepare for the hammer competition on Saturday. 

The NCAA hammer event was held at 2:00 in 90-degree heat and Hovland was able to battle through the elements to post a distance of 165-05 which came on her third, and final, attempt of the meet.

Hovland missed qualifying for the finals in the event by less than nine feet. She fouled in her first attempt as she tried to get used to the conditions and then posted a distance of 159-01 in her second try. Hovland was unable to duplicate her feat at the MIAC Meet when she set the conference record on her very last attempt of the competition.

Despite not qualifying for the finals, Hovland still finishes her collegiate career as the MIAC hammer throw champion. She also earned Outstanding Field Athlete honors from the conference outdoor meet and received USTFCCA All-Central Region honors.
