A Slow Climb In The MIAC Opener

FARGO, N.D. (2/07/15)—Concordia was unable to carry over the momentum from their streak-busting victory in the season opener to the conference opener and lost 9-0 to Bethel.

While the 9-0 score line might be the same as last season's match between the two teams, the difference in competitive play and individual match scores is a feather in the cap for the Cobbers. In 2014, Concordia won only three games in doubles play and eight games in singles play. On Saturday, CC came away with six game wins in doubles competition and 31 game victories on the singles side.

The Cobber singles crew won a pair of sets from the Royals and had two matches decided in the super-set tie breaker.

Freshman Kendra Stoick and sophomore Jade Haseltine earned the set wins for Concordia and both wound up losing in the tie breaker. Stoick dropped the first set of her match at No.2 singles 6-3 but then rallied to claim a 6-2 win in the second set. She eventually lost 10-5 in the tie breaker.  Haseltine, who won both her matches in the season opener on Sunday, started quickly at No.3 singles but then slipped up down the stretch. Haseltine won 6-4 in the opener but then lost 6-2 in set No.2. The tie breaker went all Bethel's way with a 10-2 win.

The closest other match came at No.5 singles where Morgan Sawatzke lost 6-2 in the first set but then battled in the second before dropping a 7-5 decision.

Concordia will have less than 24 hours to recover as they host St. Scholastica in a non-conference match on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 4 p.m. at Courts Plus in Fargo.
