Bookend Goals Are Costly For The Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/09/21)---The final 10 minutes have not been kind to the Cobbers in the last three games. Concordia conceded another late-game goal and dropped another 1-goal decision.

The 2-1 loss to Gustavus also marked the second straight home game where Concordia held the better of the possession, and offensive zone time, but gave up the game-winning goal in the final stretch of play.

Both teams entered Saturday's game with scoreless streaks. It would be Gustavus who would put an end to their streak first. The Gusties got on the board in the fifth minute of play on a 1-touch tap in from a cross. Gustavus won the ball, drove down the left wing, turned the corner on the CC defender and then played a ball on the ground to the middle of the goal area. A Gustie attacker made a run down the middle of the penalty area and was able to tap in the cross for the goal.

Concordia (3-9-0, 0-6-0 MIAC) had several chances before getting the equalizer. Each time they had an opportunity, the shot would sail wide or high.

The Cobbers got the game-tying goal off of a corner kick at the 32:11 mark. Junior defender Sophia Robinson took the corner from the left side of the field. She served the ball to the top of the 6-yard box where senior Lauren Tschider jumped over a defender and headed home the ball.

The goal was Tschider's second of the season. She now has seven total points which is third on the team.

The second half would go up-and-down the field as the Cobbers were able to create chances off of possession inside the Gustavus half of the field and the Gusties getting opportunities off the break.

The game-winning goal would come from a punt from the GAC goalie. The ball bounced at the midline and then Gustavus was able to win possession of the ball 45 yards out from goal. They had an attacker dribble diagonally to the right side of the penalty area. She then sent a cross to the top of the 6-yard box where an unmarked attacker 1-timed the ball into the top right side of the net.

The game-winner came at the 80:35 mark.

Concordia held an 11-9 advantage in total shots. Gustavus had a 8-3 edge in shots on net, but most of their strikes came from outside the penalty area.

Samantha Holmberg led all players with three shots. Tschider, Grace Lawlor and Lindsey Hildenbrand had the shots on goal for CC.

Bre Nelson stopped six shots in goal for CC.
