Theme Of Three Continues

NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/25/21)---The Theme of 3 continued for the Cobbers in their 3-1 loss at Carleton.

Concordia (3-6-0, 0-3-0 MIAC) has now had streaks of three in their first nine games of the year. CC opened the year by losing three straight. The Cobbers then rattled off three straight wins before losing their third straight on Saturday.

The first half proved to be the deciding factor in the game. The Cobbers gave up a pair of goals in the first 25 minutes of play, but then went 1-1 against the Knights in the second half.

Carleton (5-1-2, 2-1-0) posted their two goals in the first half less than 10 minutes apart. The opened the scoring with a tally at the 13:34 mark and then doubled the lead at 23:32.

Concordia would find the energy they needed in the second half and were rewarded for their play when junior Samantha Holmberg scored at 65:19. The goal was Holmberg's team-leading fifth of the year and set the stage for a tense final 25 minutes of play. She is now tied for fourth in the conference in goals scored.  

The Knights had a pair of shots stopped by CC keeper Bre Nelson directly after their goal, but then Sophia Robinson would come close in the 75th minute of play. Robinson fired a shot towards the top left corner of the net that was stopped by the Carleton goalie.

Carleton finished off the scoring in the final four minutes of play when they struck on a counterattack at 86:41.

Concordia was outshot 17-6 in total shots and 13-3 in shots on goal. The Knights held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

Robinson and Lauren Tschider led CC with two shots in the game. Nelson made a career-high 10 saves and now has 38 for the season which is tied for third in the MIAC.

UP NEXT: Concordia will host St. Ben's on Wednesday, Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. The Bennies are 3-3-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAC.
