Worth The Wait

SUPERIOR, Wis. (10/16/16)--- The result was worth the wait as Concordia scored two goals in each half, in a game delayed by an hour, and beat Wis.-Superior 4-0 on Sunday.

The teams were forced to wait a full 60 minutes for an official crew to show up but the delay didn't slow down the Cobbers. Concordia scored a goal in the sixth minute to take a 1-0 lead en route to its second biggest win of the season.

The win ends a three-game losing skid for the Cobbers. Concordia is now 4-8-3 overall and all four wins have come via a CC shutout. Superior loses for the fifth straight game and is now 1-12-0 in all games.

Senior Emily Wendorff led by example in a game played by the shadow of the shores of Lake Superior. She had a hand in all four Cobber goals as she scored two and assisted on two others.

Fellow senior Paige McCullough started the scoring with the eventual game-winning goal at the 5:06 mark. Wendorff set up the goal and McCullough was able to finish off the opener from five yards out for her team-leading sixth goal of the year.

Wendorff would double the Concordia lead with just under 7-minutes to play in the opening half. Wendorff knocked home a header from a cross off the foot of Emily Payne at 38:23 and the Cobbers would take a 2-0 lead into the break.

Junior central midfielder Alexandra Jones scored before the second half was less than six minutes old. The scoring play started in the hands of CC goalie Maddy Reed who punted the ball to Wendorff. Wendorff then got the ball deep into the Yellowjacket end and played the ball to Jones who finished off her third goal of the year. Reed earned her first collegiate assist on the play.

Wendorff would shut the cover on the scoring book less than 9-minutes later. Like Jones' goal to start the half, Wendorff found herself alone in front of the Superior goal and was able to push the score to 4-0 with a shot from three yards out at the 58:08 mark. Erin Eidsness was credited with the assist on the play. It is her first assist of the season.

Wendorff's second goal of the game tied her with McCullough for the team lead in goals. She now has 19 total points which is one shy of McCullough's team-best 20.

Concordia would come close to adding more goals in the final 30 minutes of play but had their chances miss the target or get stopped by the Yellowjacket goalie.

The Cobbers outshot Superior 34-3 in total shots for the game and 19-2 in shots on goal.

Wendorff led all players with seven total shots and four shots on goal.

Reed made two saves to earn her fourth career shutout.

34-19x2=W
That may seem like a strange math equation but it represents the second time the Cobber offensive has put up those shot totals. The Cobbers' 34 total shots and 19 shots on goal against Superior are the exact same totals as Concordia had in their 5-0 win against Minn.-Morris on Sept. 21.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Cobbers will now have a week break to prepare for their penultimate home game of the year. Concordia will host Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. The Royals are currently in third place in the MIAC standings but have lost two straight.
