Four-Minute Span Costs Cobbers Tourney Title

DULUTH, Minn. (9/06/15)—A pair of goals less than four minutes apart proved to be the difference between the championship of the Advantage Emblem Cup and a runner-up finish.

Concordia saw their 1-0 lead evaporate in a span of 3:31 starting in the 63rd minute and lost 2-1 to Wis.-Whitewater in the tournament title game played at St. Scholastica.

The Cobbers got on the board first when Emily Wendorff connected on her second goal of the weekend when she beat the Warhawk goalie to the ball and rolled a shot into the open goal. Wendorff's tally at 32:26 gave CC the opening goal in their second of three games in 2015.

The Cobber defense held tight until the decisive span in the second half. Whitewater scored on a penalty kick at 62:26 and then added the game winner at 65:57 on a header off of a free kick.

Cobber goalie Elizabeth Bitzan stopped four shots while UWW keeper Erin Doody made one stop which came in the second minute of the game.

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Concordia had four players named to the Emblem Advantage All-Tournament Team. Wendorff was a "no-brainer" after scoring in each game. She was joined by seniors Bitzan, Sadie Hayes and Morgan Holm.

MOMENT THAT MATTERED
A Solid Start II
For the second straight game Concordia started the game on the attack. CC nearly went ahead 1-0 at the 1:29 when freshman Alison Enno drilled a shot that forced the Whitewater goalie to make a diving save.

Hand Ball?
The game was tied on a penalty kick after a Cobber player was whistled for handling the ball in the penalty area. Neither team reacted to the infraction and kept playing until the referee stopped play to award the spot kick.

STAT STUFF
Concordia has now allowed at least 14 shots in two of its first three games of the year. CC has been outshot by a combined total of 43-19 in the first games. Wendorff leads Concordia in shots for the season with six.

The penalty kick was the first whistled against the Cobbers since the 11th game of last season. Concordia only had one PK called against them in 2014. The Cobbers' lone penalty kick of last year also came in the game against St. Mary's on Oct. 4 – a 2-1 win for CC.

QUOTABLE
"We are continuing to get better offensively and our midfield has progressed in all three games."  - Head Coach Kevin Roos on the team's offensive progress over the weekend.
