Prosinski To Prosinski To Stay In Pursuit

ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/29/14)—The Prosinski sisters teamed up to score the only goal in Concordia's 1-0 win at Macalester to keep the Cobbers in the chase for their fifth MIAC regular-season championship.

Marta Prosinski's goal at the 71:09 mark, which was gift-wrapped by her twin sister Laura, broke the scoreless deadlock and gave Concordia its first win in the last four games. The goal also snapped the team's scoreless streak of 261 minutes and gave the team at least one home playoff game in the upcoming conference tournament.

Concordia is now 12-3-2 overall and 7-1-2 in conference play. The Cobbers have 23 conference points which is one point shy of St. Benedict and Augsburg. The Cobbers will play the Blazers in Collegeville on Saturday, Nov. 1. A win by the Concordia coupled with a St. Thomas victory over the Auggies will make CC the 2014 conference regular-season champion and earn them the No.1 seed in the league tournament and a bye into the semifinals of the newly-updated six-team tournament.

With the win over the Scots the Cobbers can finish no worse than fourth place in the final MIAC standings. The top 4 teams in the conference will all host at least one playoff game. The No.3 and 4 seeds will host a quarterfinal game with the winners moving on to face the No.1 and 2 seeds in the semifinals.

The game-winning goal for Concordia at Macalester was set up after a Scot goal kick. Senior midfielder Elizabeth Robinson was able to stick her leg out and deflect the clearing service straight up in the air, 30 yards out from goal. Laura Prosinki was able to latch on to the ball after it bounced several times with neither team being able to get possession. Laura dribbled the ball straight forward at the Macalester back line. When the final defenders stepped up and converged to stop her progress at the top of the penalty area, Laura was able to slip the ball to her right to Marta who was wide open just out from the right post. Marta took one ouch on the mini-breakaway and then slotted the ball on the ground past the oncoming Scot keeper.

The combination of Prosinski to Prosinski for the winner marked only the second time in their collegiate careers on a goal. The first time was last year when Marta set up Laura in the Cobbers' 10-1 at Dominican. The goal was the second of the season for Marta and it was Laura's second assist of 2014.

The Concordia defense would only be challenged a few more times in the final 18 minutes of play as they posted their league-leading 10th shutout of the season.

The Cobbers wound up outshooting Macalester 17-16 in total shots while the teams were even at 8-8 in shots on goal. Robinson had a team-high four shots for CC and now has a Cobber-best 49 on the season. That mark is second best in the MIAC.

Concordia goalie Elizabeth Bitzan made eight stops on the night and lowered her season goals against average to 0.61. That mark is also second in the conference.

The table is now set for the regular-season finale showdown with the Blazers. The two teams have been at the top of the MIAC for the past several seasons. Concordia has 53 overall wins since 2010 which is the tops in the league during that time but only three better than St. Benedict. Both teams have 31 conference victories over that period of time.

The Cobbers and Blazers will square off on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. at the St. John's practice field on the campus of St. John's. St. Benedict is using the St. John's practice field as their game field in 2014 because of a complete renovation of the field on the Blazer campus.
