First-Time Goal Scorers Help Cobbers Breeze To A Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/13/14)—A trio of first-time goal scorers helped No.17-ranked Concordia pull away from Lawrence in the final 15 minutes of play to come away with a 3-0 win.

Emily Wendorff, Abby Vogelsberg and Morgan Holm all scored their first goal of the year in helping the Cobbers post their fourth victory of the season.

The victory came in the final game of the "preseason" and ups Concordia's overall record to 4-1. The Cobbers will now turn their attention to the MIAC as they open conference play next week. The Vikings are still looking for their first win of the season and fall to 0-4.

The game was played with 15-20mph wind blowing from end-to-end.  Concordia went against the wind in the first half and was able to work the ball on the ground and get behind the Lawrence defense on the wing.  CC scored a single goal in the first 45 minutes and then used the breeze to finish off the second half with a pair of strikes.

The shot totals were identical in each half with Concordia enjoying an 8-1 advantage going into the wind and then with the wind.

Wendorff opened the scoring in the first half when she finished off a passing play from Rochelle Hickerson and Erika Grinde.  It was the fourth goal of her collegiate career. She had three goals in 2013 as a freshman.

The Cobbers were able to control the middle of the field for most of the game but were never able to get quality chances inside the Viking penalty area. Concordia's finishing touch blew away in the wind and only came back home in the final 15 minutes of play.

Vogelsberg gave Concordia the cushion they needed to earn the win when she tallied her first collegiate goal at 75:50. Wendorff was credited with the assist to finish off her two-point game. Wendorff now has a team-high three assists for the season.

Morgan Holm capped off the scoring in the 81st minute of play. The junior forward was able to get behind the Lawrence defense off of a long ball from Libby Fransdal and poked home her first goal of the year. The assist was Fransdal's second of the season and gives her four points.

Cobber keeper Elizabeth Bitzan needed to make only one save to earn her fourth shutout of the year. Concordia has posted a shutout in all four wins this season.

The Cobbers will open conference play when they host St. Catherine on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m.
