A Much Needed One Point On The Road

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (10/07/13)—Concordia came away with an equalizing goal in the 53rd minute to earn a 1-1 double overtime time with Augsburg in a battle of two of the top 4 teams in the MIAC.

The Cobbers' game-tying goal in the second half completed a rally that started last Wednesday when the originally scheduled game was postponed due to a lightning storm that blew through the Minneapolis area after just 17 minutes were played in the first half. CC trailed 2-0 at the time but due to NCAA rules, the game was nullified and the teams started over on Monday.

The tie keeps Concordia tied atop the MIAC standings with the Auggies. The Cobbers are now 4-1-1 in conference play and 7-3-1 overall. CC has only lost once in the last seven games. Augsburg is now 4-0-1 in the MIAC and 8-0-4 overall.

For the second straight game against Augsburg the Cobbers fell behind 1-0 in the first half. Concordia conceded the opening goal of the game at 31:00. Concordia chased the game for most of the first half and was outshot 5-2.

The second half was a different story for the Cobbers. After some halftime adjustments, Concordia was able to attack the Auggie defense and create more quality chances. CC was rewarded for their offensive pressure in the 53rd minute when Concordia served several balls into the Augsburg penalty area. The Auggie defense was able to clear several attempts before the final cross produced a 1-on-1 battle for the ball. The ball popped out of clash and caromed to Laura Prosinski who stepped into a shot from 16 yards out and put it over the outstretched hand of the diving Auggie keeper. The unassisted goal at 52:28 was Prosinski's first of the season.

The final 37 minutes of play were spent from penalty area to penalty area. Each team only had one shot on goal for the rest of the second half.

The best chance for either team in overtime came in the second extra session when the Cobbers had a potential game-winning goal called back because of offsides. Gina Weiss knocked home a rebound after the Augsburg goalie bobbled the original shot but Weiss was deemed to have been in an offside position on the shot.

Augsburg held a 14-13 edge in total shots while Concordia had a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Cobber goalie Elizabeth Bitzan had three saves and is now 7-3-1 on the season.

Concordia will have a four-day break before returning to action when they play at Hamline on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 1:30 p.m.
