1-For-32 Is Just Enough

ST. PAUL, Minn. (9/17/13)—1-for-32 in basketball will get you a spot on the bench. 1-for-32 (.031) in baseball will get you sent to the minors. 1-for-32 in soccer can often get you a win and that is what happened on Tuesday as Concordia scored only one goal on their 32 shots and beat St. Catherine 1-0.

The Cobbers offense produced 17 shots in the first half and then 15 more in th e second but it was Marta Prosinski's third goal in the last two games that proved to be the game winner in the conference opener for both teams.

The win for the Cobbers is their second straight and their fourth in the last five games. CC is now 4-2-0 overall this season. St. Kate's loses for the first time in two games and is now 2-3-0 overall.

Concordia was able to win possession of the ball and connect passes into the attacking end of play throughout the entire game. The Cobbers had eight shots on goal in the first but could never find the back of the net.

The game remained the same at the start of the second half. The Cobbers had a pair of shots hit the crossbar in the first six minutes of play in the second period and finally scored at the 54-minute mark when senior defender Annie Marhula served a ball into the Wildcat penalty area. The St. Kate's goalie had the ball go off her fingers and fall in front of Prosinski who knocked the ball into the upper right corner of the net.  The goal was Prosinski's team-leading fifth of the season and the assist for Marhula was her first of the season.

Concordia continued the offensive attack for the final 36 minutes and put up 10 more shots and had five corner kicks but were unable to come up with an insurance goal.

The Cobbers wound up outshooting the Wildcats 32-7 in total shots and 16-5 in shots on goal. CC also had a lopsided edge in corners. Concordia recorded eight corners while not conceding a corner kick.

Concordia goalkeeper Elizabeth Bitzan made five saves to earn her third shutout of the season. Of Concordia's four wins this season, three have been with a shutout.

The Cobbers will return home to host Gustavus on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 1 p.m. as part of the annual Family Weekend celebration.
