A Seven Senior Celebration

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/09/18)---Concordia won the first nine individual matches in their dual with St. Olaf and rolled over the Oles 49-6 in the annual Senior Night Celebration meet.

The Cobbers won four matches by forfeit and then claimed four others by bonus-point decisions to post the largest margin of victory on the season. CC finishes the year with a 5-9 record in dual meets.

Concordia was staked to an 18-0 lead as St. Olaf left the first three weight classes open. Jake Nohre, Aaron Dick and Adam Presler all accepted the wins by walking to the center of the mat and all earned six team points in the process.

The first contested match came at 149 where Ty Johnson recorded the first bonus point win of the night for Concordia. Johnson had four takedowns in the first two minutes of his match before getting his opponent on his back and earning the pin at 2:06.

Travis Deegan followed Johnson's pin at 149 by recording a pin in the second period at 157. Deegan had two takedowns in the first period and led 4-1 before earning the pin from the top position to start the second period.

Joe Heinz then earned a forfeit win at 165 to give Concordia a 36-0 lead after six matches.

Jake Johnson battled through the tightest match of the night by scoring a 10-3 decision at 174. He didn't allow a takedown in the match and had two of his own in the opening period. Johnson then had an escape and takedown to start the second period and went to the third leading 7-2. He gave up an escape but then got a takedown and earned the riding time point to win by seven.

Nick Gravdahl and Kody Van Den Eykel each posted  a win by technical fall in the next two matches to put the Cobbers up 49-0 with one bout left in the contest.

Gravdahl got a takedown right away in the opening period and then had a pair of four-point near falls. He then gave up an escape in the second but then recorded a takedown and finished off the 16-1 win with his third four-point near fall of the match.

Van Den Eykel wasted little time in racking up 18 points in the first period. He scored an early takedown and then finished off the match by getting his opponent on his back on four different occasions for a quartet of four-point near falls.

NO TAKEDOWNS FOR YOU: Concordia didn't allow a takedown in the first five contested matches of the meet. During those bouts the Cobbers outscored the Oles 68-7.

WIN KING: The forfeit win for Aaron Dick kept him in the team lead for wins this year. Dick is now 22-13 on the year. His 22 wins are two more than Joe Heinz who has a 20-11 record and three more than Jake Nohre and Kody Van DenEykel who both have 19 victories.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a two-week break to get ready for the newly formatted Upper Midwest Region Meet at Augsburg on Feb. 23-24. The new region meet will be contested over two days and feature 17 teams instead of 11 and include more teams from Wisconsin, including nationally ranked Wis.- Whitewater and Wis.-La Crosse and also the No.23-ranked U of Chicago and Wheaton from Illinois. Like in the past years, the top three wrestlers at each weight class in the regional will earn a spot in the NCAA Championship Meet.
