Close Until Midway Through The Third

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/07/20)--- Concordia stayed close to No.6-ranked Gustavus until midway through the third period when the Gusties scored a pair of goals in the final 9:21 of play and came away with a 4-0 win at the Moorhead Sports Center.

Cobber freshman goalie Kiana Flaig stopped 26 of the 28 shots she faced in the first two periods to keep Concordia within two goals heading into the third period. Gustavus then scored on a breakaway at the 12:32 mark of the final frame and then added a tip-in goal on the power play at 16:49 to bring the final score to 4-0.

The loss drops Concordia's record to 6-14-0 on the season. CC is now 4-9-0 in conference play and tied for seventh place in the league standings. Gustavus wins for the fifth time in the last seven games and ups its overall record to 14-3-2. The Gusties are 10-1-2 in the MIAC and remain tied for second place in the conference standings.

Flaig was solid in goal all game long and only allowed one goal in the first period and another lone tally in the second as she faced 28 shots on goal in the first 40 minutes of play.

Concordia's best chance to score in the first two periods came on a power play at the 13:09 mark of the second period. The Cobbers controlled the puck in the offensive zone for almost the entire two minutes and had a couple of shots deflect off players in front of goal that could have fooled the Gustie goalie.

Concordia finished with 11 shots on goal in the game with six coming in the second period. Junior forward Kaitlyn Page had a team-high three shots on goal while Amanda Flemming and Megan Mohr both had two in the game.

Flaig finished with 42 saves in the game including 16 in the final period.

Concordia was held off the board in their two power play chances while Gustavus was 1-for-5 with the extra attacker.   

INSIDE STAT INFO: Freshman Kiana Flaig added to her MIAC-leading save total. Flaig now has 551 saves this season which is tops in the conference by over 150 saves. Flaig is also seventh in all of Division III in total number of saves.
