Senior Night Celebration

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/02/18)---Concordia answered twice but couldn't come up with the third reply against league-leading Hamline in the annual Senior Celebration game.

The Cobbers rallied from being down 2-1 and 3-2 before the Pipers won the game on a breakaway with less than 8-minutes remaining in regulation to earn a 4-3 victory.

The Cobbers had a golden opportunity to tie the game with less than five minute to play but a point-blank shot from the right side of the crease was stopped by the Hamline goalie's stick after she dove from the left post to make the save.

The loss is the second straight to a team in the Top 2 of the league standings for Concordia. The Cobbers are still inside the conference playoff picture as they are 6-4-3 in league play and tied for fourth place. CC is now 9-8-3 overall. Hamline wins for the second straight game and is now 15-3-2 in all games and 10-2-1 in the MIAC.

Freshman Megan Mohr got Concordia on the board first when she picked off a clearing pass in the Piper zone and then snapped home a shot from between the circles. Mohr's goal at 12:55 was an even-strength strike.

Hamline would then add two even-strength tallies of their own before the end of the first period. The second goal came at 18:56 of the opening period and gave HU a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

The Cobbers came up with their first game-tying goal when Tori Davis chased down a centering pass from Amanda Flemming behind the Hamline defense and just at the faceoff circle. Davis' momentum brought her to the top of the crease where she poked the puck under the Hamline goalies' pads before slamming into the post. Concordia's second goal of the game was Davis' 11th of the season.

The Pipers would take their second one-goal lead less than three minutes later when they scored the only power play goal of the game.

Another Cobber freshman would bring CC level for the second time in the period. Brooke McMillen picked an opportune time to score her first collegiate goal. She scooped up the puck between the circles and fired a shot past the HU goalie. Kaitlyn Page had the assist on the game-tying goal at 15:11 of the middle frame.

The game would stay deadlocked at 1-1 until the second half of the third period. Unfortunately for the Concordia defense they lost sight of the league's leading goal scorer Bre Simon. Simon got behind the CC defense and a teammate fed her the puck from her own blue line. Simon then went free on a breakaway and put home the winner at 12:55 of the final stanza.

Concordia was outshot 38-25 in the game. Davis had a team-high four shots while four other CC players had three shots each.

Junior goalie Brittany Boss made 34 saves in goal for CC.

POWER PLAY PLUGGED: Concordia's DIII leading power play unit was held off the board for the second straight game after scoring in seven straight games. The Cobbers were 0-for-3 on the power play against the Pipers. CC now has a 31.3% success rate on the power play and still leads the nation in that category.

POINT STREAK EXTENDED: Amanda Flemming extended her point streak with the assist on Tori Davis' second-period goal. Flemming now has at least one point in nine straight games. Flemming leads Concordia in scoring this year with 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points. Her 25 points are the most by a Cobber since the 2015 season when Maddy Gendreau put up 26 points.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will try for the series split when the teams square off in the finale on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
