Sluggish Slow Start Saturday

MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. (1/27/18)---The Cobbers knew it wasn't going to be a good Saturday when they conceded a goal just 16-seconds into the opening period. That dark cloud start led to a 7-1 loss at St. Thomas.

Concordia fell behind 5-0 at the start of the third period before sophomore Amanda Flemming got CC on the board with an even-strength goal at 2:56 of the final frame.

While the final score was more of a lopsided affair the shots on goal were much closer than Friday night's 3-3 overtime tie. The Tommies held a 36-24 edge in shots for the game. The slow start was represented in the shot total as well. UST held a 12-6 edge in the first period but then Concordia responded with 11 shots in the second period and seven in the third.

Flemming tied for the game high in shots on goal. She led the Cobbers with six pucks on target. Freshman defenseman Callie Fagerstrom was the only CC player with more than two shots on goal. She finished with four total shots.

Amy Jost went the distance in goal for Cobbers. She made 29 saves in the game.

The loss drops Concordia's overall record to 9-7-3 while their MIAC mark falls to 6-3-3. The Cobbers are now in fourth place in the conference standings. The win for the Tommies keeps them in second place. St. Thomas is now 11-3-5 in all games and 7-1-4 in league play.

GOAL SCORER, POINT MAKER: Amanda Flemming continued her torrid sophomore scoring season. With her goal in the series finale at UST she now has 13 goals and 11 assists for a team-high 24 points. Last year she only had 12 points so she has doubled that total. Flemming is currently tied for fifth in overall scoring in the MIAC and is fourth in goals scored. Flemming has tallied at least one point in eight straight games.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will return home to host league-leading Hamline in a two-game series on Friday, Feb. 2 and Saturday, Feb. 3. The Pipers are 14-3-2 overall and 9-2-1 in the MIAC.
