King Kong(elf) Leads Scoring Spree

Moorhead, Minn. (11/13/15) --- The Concordia high-powered offense continued to roll forward in 2015. The Cobbers scored five more goals and blanked St. Benedict 5-0 in the home, and MIAC, opener.

Concordia has now scored 13 goals in its first three games of the year. The Cobbers didn't score 13 goals last season until the final game of December.

The win is the first of the year for Concordia and moves their overall record to 1-2-0. The Blazers are also 1-2-0 on the season.

The game was less than four minutes old when the hottest scoring Cobber opened the floodgates with an unassisted goal at 3:50. Junior Jessica Kongelf intercepted a pass inside the St. Ben's zone and broke free on the goal where she proceeded to snap off a forehand which went top shelf.

Kongelf wasn't through with her scoring streak. She doubled Concordia's lead at the back end of the period when she netted her fourth goal of the year at 16:57. Anna Westmark and Kara Tupa were credited with the assists.

Kongelf has now matched her goal output from 26 games last year in the first three games of this season.

The Cobbers took a 2-0 lead into the second period but it was the Blazers who held an 11-10 advantage in shots on goal for the first 20 minutes. Junior goalie Andrea Klug stopped all 11 shots she faced and helped the Cobbers keep their two-goal advantage until midway through the second period.

While scoring sensation Jessie Kongelf staked CC to a 2-0 lead it was an unlikely goal scorer who gave Concordia a three-goal cushion. Senior Abby Kratzke scored her first collegiate goal at 11:04 to give the Cobbers a 3-0 lead. Kayla Nack and Morgan Bruns were credited with the assists on the play.

Sophomore Tori Davis then put the game out of reach when she found the back of the net less than three minutes later. She scored and even-strength goal at 13:46 with assists from Hannah Johnston and Bruns.

The only goal of the third period came from the stick of MIAC Player of the Week Anna Westmark. Westmark capped off the scoring while the Cobbers were shorthanded at 13:16 of the final frame. For Westmark it was her third goal in the last two games. She is now second on the team in scoring with three goals and two assists for five points.

Klug finished off her seventh career shutout by stopping all 10 shots she faced in the third period. Klug made 27 saves in the game.

Concordia outshot the Blazers 33-27 for the game. Amber Schaack led all players with eight shots on goal. She now has a team-high 21 shots in the first three games of the year. That total is tops in the MIAC this season.

Neither team could capitalize on the power play. Concordia was held scoreless in their three attempts while St. Benedict went 0-for-5 on the power play.

The same two teams will finish off their two-game series on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
