March Comes In Riding A Broom

CLERMONT, Fla. (03/01/22)--- March came in riding a broom for Concordia. The Cobbers' finally picked up their much-awaited sweep in Florida. Megan Gavin was, well Megan Gavin, in the opener as Concordia bageled Regis (Mass.) 6-0. Karissa Finnigan picked up where Gavin left off in the second game, struck out seven batters and recorded her first collegiate victory in CC's 8-1 victory over North Central (Minn.).

The two wins up Concordia's record to 5-3 on the season. CC is now 4-2 in games played outdoors in the Sunshine State.

Gavin might want to look into getting residency in Florida. Since leaving the state of Minnesota, she has pitched 21.0 innings, struck out 41, only allowed one earned run and is a perfect 3-0.

On Tuesday, Gavin threw a 1-hitter that included 14 strikeouts as she recorded her second straight shutout in the Cobbers 6-0 win over Regis. She didn't allow a base runner until the top of the fourth, and Regis' only hit of the game came with two outs in the sixth frame. Gavin didn't allow a runner past second base the entire game.

The Cobbers gave Gavin all the runs she would need in the first and second innings. CC scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and then added three more in the second.

Molly Wilde started her 4-hit day by singling home both runs in the first. Emma Redlin had a run-scoring double in the third, and Ellie Tofteland followed later in the inning with a double that plated two more runs.

Concordia outhit Regis 9-1 in the opener. Gabby Brown and Drew Syverson had the only multiple-hit games for Concordia. Brown had a double in the sixth as the Cobbers recorded four 2-baggers in the game.

Finnigan came up with the best pitching performance of her college career in Concordia's 8-1 win over North Central in Game 2. She didn't allow a single earned run, struck out seven and scattered six hits over 7.0 innings. The longest outing in her college career before Tuesday was a 4.0 inning start on the first day in Florida.

Rachel Woodley finished off the win by pitching the seventh inning against North Central.

The Cobbers needed only seven hits to produce the eight runs against the Rams. Of those seven hits, five were for extra bases – including a pair of triples.

Wilde capped her day by going 3-for-4 with a double and a triple. Freshman Danielle Lyon was 2-for-3 and she also posted a double and triple. Both players also drove in two runs.

Valerie Kolstad
record the other double in the finale as she went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks.

Emma Redlin had a single hit in both games to extend her team-best hitting streak to five games.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have a day off before returning to action on Thursday, Mar. 3 when they face Moravian (Pa.) and Rose-Hulman (Ind.).
