Top Conference Marks Abound At 2025 Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/25/25)---The Cobbers took to the track for the first time in 2025 as they hosted the 72nd annual Cobber Open. The Cobbers took home four individual wins and came away with 11 Top 15 MIAC performances.
The Cobbers were led by a trio of point scorers from last year's conference meet.
The Cobbers' first victory of the day was posted by Brady Goss, who won the mile with a time of 4:27.03, followed by his brother Tyler Goss who placed second with a time of 4:32.49. Those times are No.8 and No.13 in the conference.
That Cobber victory was followed by a victory in the 400 meters by senior Trevor Tiongson. He clocked a time of 51.88 which is good for fourth in the MIAC this year.
The last track victory came from first-year athlete Brayden Carlson, who ran a time of 1:26.12 in the 600 meters. That time is No.15 in the MIAC.
Tiongson and Carlson also helped lead the Cobbers to a second-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Tiongson, Carlson, Ryan Richardson and Gavin Groshelle clocked a time of 3:33.83, which ranks sixth in the conference.
In the field events, All-American Cooper Folkestad led the charge by winning the shot put with a throw of 52-00, more than three feet over the second-place finisher. He set the tone for the Cobbers as Blake Houska (46-06), Dominik Hillstrom (43-08.5), and Brayden Sjoblom (41-01) all placed inside the Top 6, with all marks ranking in the top 15 in the conference.
Gabe Thompson placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 42-05.25, ranking eighth in the MIAC. In the high jump, Peyton Johnsrud and Anthony Marsh both cleared 6-02, finishing second and third. Peyton Kessel also contributed with a 5th-place finish, jumping 6-00, which ranks eighth in the MIAC.
First-year vaulter Tyler Evans capped off the day for the Cobbers with a standout performance in the pole vault. Evans cleared a height of 13-08.25 placing second. That height is ranked seventh in the MIAC this year.
The Cobbers return to action next Friday, January 31 when they head north to compete at the UND Open at 6:30 p.m.
