Olson, Erlandson & Zylstra Go Top 3 At Cobber Duals

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/02/13)—A week after setting the Concordia school record in the pole vault senior Erik Olson came away with the only event win at the Cobber Duals as CC finished in third place with a 4-2 record.

Olson didn't clear the 15-foot mark in the second indoor meet of the year but he did post a height of 14-01.75 which was five inches higher than the second-place finisher.

Olson was one of three Concordia field athletes to post top 3 finishes at the meet. Senior Simon Erlandson was third in the high jump and freshman Brandon Zylstra was third in the long jump. Erlandson cleared 6-04 which is two inches higher from last week and is an indoor personal best. His height is currently the fifth best in the MIAC this season. Erlandson was also fourth in the long jump with a distance of 20-07.25. That is also a personal best for Erlandson. Zylstra pulled off a similar feat as Erlandson as he placed third in one event and fourth in the other. Zylstra uncorked a jump of 20-08 in the long jump. That ties for the seventh farthest in the MIAC this season and farthest by a Cobber since 2011. Zylstra was fourth in the high jump with the same height as Erlandson but finished fourth because of misses at the lower heights.

The top Cobber finish in the track events came from the 4x200-meter relay quartet team of Bruce Shields, Alex Benzegala, Logan Carlson and John Bye who ran a 1:32.84 and won the event by over one second. That time is the fastest in the MIAC this season and 12 seconds faster than the top CC team at last week's meet.

Concordia junior Luke Lagergren had the top individual finish in a running event. Lagergren clocked a 2:04.82 in the 800 meters and finished in fourth place.

The Cobbers will now hit the road for the next three meets before the MIAC Championship Meet. Concordia will next compete at the Bison Open on Saturday, Feb. 9 beginning at 11:30 a.m.
