Racquets Starting To Thaw Out In Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. (03/01/22)--- After spending the first month of the season in icy Fargo-Moorhead, Concordia's racquets are starting thaw out.

The Cobbers strung (pun intended) together their best 2-match streak of the season and dropped a pair of heartbreaking decisions on Day 2 in the warmth of Florida. CC lost its opener on Friday 6-3 to Houghton (N.Y.) and were then edged at the wire 5-4 by Adrian (Mich.) in the day's final match.

The No.1 doubles team of Jake Peters and Eli Simonson were the only 2-match winners on the day. They claimed an 8-7 (3) win in the tie-breaker against Houghton and then recorded an 8-6 victory against Adrian.

The other two wins in the opener against Houghton came in singles play. Sophomore Sean Martin won his first singles match of the year after his opponent had to retire in the second set in their match at No.2 singles after Martin took the first set 6-4.

Freshman Logan Voight won his first collegiate singles match when he came through with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) straight set win at No.6 singles.

Concordia grabbed a 2-1 lead after the three doubles matches against Adrian. Peters and Simonson won 8-6 and then Grant Storm and Kipton Jenson won the closest doubles bout of the day as they showed their grit with an 8-7 (5) win at No.2 doubles. Jenson had a pair of clutch backhand slapshots from just outside the crease in the tie-breaker to give CC the advantage.

Peters claimed his second singles win of the Florida swing (pun intended) when he recorded a vichyssoise in the super-set tie-breaker at No.1 singles. He won the first set 6-3, but then dropped the second 6-2 before winning 10-8 in the tie-breaker.

Simonson was the other singles winner for CC. He snapped (pun intended) his first win of the year when his opponent retired in the second set after Simonson posted the 6-0 bagel in the opener.

UP NEXT: Concordia will look to take have their racquets completely thawed out when they return to action on Thursday, Mar. 3 when they face Regis (Mass.) and Calvin (Mich.).
