Jake From Concordia Clinches Win

SUPERIOR, Wis. (2/16/20)--- Concordia junior Jake Peters provided the match-clinching win at No.6 singles as he helped the Cobbers clip Wis.-Superior 5-4.

Peters, who didn't even play tennis in high school, but has developed his game over the past three years, outlasted his opponent 6-2, 6-3 in a  tense-filled match that proved to be the difference in the team score. Peters has become a reliable presence for the Cobbers and used his unique playing style, sheer athleticism and strong mental game to control the match on the tartan surface at the Superior Fieldhouse.

The script for the win at Superior was flipped from Saturday night when Concordia captured all three doubles matches but then fell in singles play. On Sunday, the Cobbers were only able to capture one doubles win against the Yellowjackets but then rolled in singles play.

The No.1 team of Jared Saue and Erik Porter earned the lone doubles victory with an 8-4 decision over Will Sherman and Henry Simpson. The win was the third of the year for Saue and Porter in doubles competition which leads the team.

The other two double matches finished with identical 8-6 score lines. In both bouts the Cobbers struggled with their returns and were unable to win either match. David Youngs and Carter Steffes lost 8-6 at No.2 doubles while Eli Simonson and Grant Storm also dropped an 8-6 contest at the No.3 spot.

Trailing 2-1 after the doubles matches, the Cobbers elevated their game in singles play. Senior Saue notched a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. singles while Youngs claimed his second singles victory of the weekend with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No.3. The victory was Youngs' team-leading fourth of the season.

Freshman Cole Gillespie added to the Cobber win total by picking up a 6-3,7-5 win over Grady Huuswirth at No.5 singles. Gillespie got down 4-1 in the second but was able to stir up some magic and pull out the second set 7-5. Gillespie now has two singles wins on the year.

INSIDE STAT INFO: The Cobbers took part in the inaugural match for UW-Superior's tennis program in 2017 and blanked the Yellowjackets 9-0. The Cobbers are now 3-0 against Superior in the young history of the series.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers (2-4, 0-1 MIAC) look to build on their Sunday win next weekend when they open the MIAC season at St. John's on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in Sartell. The Johnnies are 1-0 on the year.
