Zitur Ends Cobber Career In Style

FARGO, N.D. (4/24/16)—Concordia finished off the 2016 season by falling 8-1 to Macalester.

The swing matches came in the top two doubles bouts which were each decided by the minimum two game and then one singles match which was decided in a super-set tie-breaker.

The loss ends the Cobbers' campaign with a 2-11 overall record and a 2-7 mark in MIAC play. Concordia was picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches' poll and will place eighth in the final regular-season standings. Macalester wins for the third time in the last four matches and moves to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in league play.

Concordia senior Zach Zitur capped his career in style by earning the team's lone win of the day. Zitur won in the super-set tie-breaker at No.3 singles. He cruised to 6-2 win in the opening set before losing in the tie-breaker in the second set. Zitur then went back-and-forth for the entire super-set before prevailing by winning the last two points and claiming a 12-10 win.

Jesse Schneeberger lost in the super-set at No.4 singles in a match that could have gone either way. Schneeberger won the first set 7-5 but then his opponent returned the favor with a 7-5 win in the second. Schneeberger was never able to get momentum in the super-set tie-breaker and wound up falling 10-4.

Zitur and Matthew Engum lost 8-6 at No.2 doubles in one of the key early matches of the team competition. The Cobber No.1 singles tandem of Isaac Toivonen and David Schneck also dropped an 8-6 decision.
