Stymied In The Super-Set

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/18/15)—Concordia continues to knock on the door of team and individual victories but still can't find a way to have anyone answer the door. The Cobbers dropped three singles matches in the super-set tie-breaker against Division II opponent St. Cloud State and wound up losing 9-0.

The three singles matches and two of the doubles matches had key points that could have gone either way swing in the favor of the Huskies as Concordia hosted their outdoor home opener.

The three singles bouts that went to the super-set tie-breaker came at No.1 and No.2 singles as well as the final match of the afternoon at No.6 singles.

Cobber freshman Isaac Toivonen cruised to a 6-4 win in the opening set at No.1 singles but then lost the second set 6-1. He would regroup at the start of the super-set tie-breaker only to fall 10-5 in the end.

Zach Zitur also got off to a q quick start in his bout at No.2 singles. He claimed the opening set 6-2. He was then broken in the second set and lost 6-4. Zitur was never able to get on top in the super-set tie-breaker and lost 10-4.

The closest match of the day came at the end of a beautiful afternoon for outdoor tennis. Unlike Toivonen and Zitur, junior Zach Biggar lost the first set and then won the second set. He dropped a close 7-5 battle in the opener and then broke back for a 6-4 win in the second set. Biggar started slow in the super-set tie-breaker and got behind 7-4 but then rallied to tie the bout at 8-8. He then lost two of the next three points and dropped an 11-9 decision.

Toivonen and fellow freshman David Schneck had the closest doubles match to start the day. The pair, playing at No.1 doubles, lost 8-5.

Concordia will finish off the 2015 season when they host Carleton on Sunday, Apr. 19 at 9:30 a.m. at Courts Plus in Fargo.
