Toivonen Tops Second Straight All-MIAC Opponent

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (2/15/15)—Concordia freshman Isaac Toivonen is finding the MIAC to his liking. Toivonen won the second straight conference match to start his career but it wasn't enough as the Cobbers lost 8-1 to St. Thomas in a match played in Grand Forks.

The teams were forced to play the Cobber home match in Grand forks because of a scheduling conflict at Courts Plus - Concordia's regular home venue.

The match against the Tommies was the third of the young season for the Cobbers. CC continues to look for its first dual-match win, falling to 0-3 for the year. Concordia is now 0-2 in the MIAC. St. Thomas wins their conference opener and ups their overall record to 2-0.

Toivonen has two conference matches under his belt and now has wins against two opponents that were on the MIAC All-Conference Team last year.

On Sunday Toivonen rolled to a straight-set 6-0, 7-5 win over St. Thomas junior Brady Radermacher. Radermacher was All-Conference last year as the Tommies' No.1 singles player. He also made the All-MIAC Team as a doubles player in his freshman season in 2013.

Toivonen opened MIAC play on Feb. 7 by beating Matt Schull of Bethel who was on the All-Conference Team last year as a freshman. Toivonen is now 2-1 in dual matches this year after opening his college career by going 4-1 at the ITA Regional Tournament in the fall.

Unfortunately for CC, Toivonen's win at No.1 singles would be the only point of the day. Toivonen teamed with Zach Zitur at No.1 doubles and the tandem fell 8-2.

Zitur then had the closest singles match of the other five. Playing at No.2 singles, Zitur dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision.

Concordia will now take a break from conference play for their annual spring break training trip. The Cobbers will head to southern California for a week to train at the hometown facilities of head coach Steve Futchko. CC will have one dual match while in California. The Cobbers will square off against Chapman on Friday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m.
