A 2016 Snapshot Non-Conference Win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (10/16/16)--- Concordia's two games over the weekend pretty much summed up the 2016 season. Struggle against conference opponents and excel against non-conference foes.

On Saturday the Cobbers allowed two goals in the first three minutes of play, couldn't get a goal despite putting up a season-high 19 shots and lost 2-0 at St. John's. On Sunday Concordia locked down the Kohawk offense, posted 16 shots and beat IIAC opponent Coe 1-0.

Concordia is now 5-1-1 against non-conference opponents and 5-9-1 overall. The win snaps a three-game losing slide for the Cobbers while the Kohawks have now lost seven straight and are 1-13 overall.

The Cobbers had the majority of the possession the entire game and were able to work the ball around the middle of the field. Concordia's best offensive output came in the first half when they took 11 total shots and had three shots on goal.

The game-winning goal came in the 22nd minute when senior wing Matthew Fulks received the ball just outside the left corner of the Coe penalty area. He took on dribble and found forward Austin Peterson who was "posted" up on a Kohawk defender inside the penalty area. Peterson then laid off a perfect give-and-go pass to Fulks who had sprinted past his defender.

Fulks received the ball 10 yards out from goal behind the Kohawk defense. He took two dribbles to his right and then fired a left-footed shot past the diving keeper into the left side of the goal.

The goal at 21:12 was Fulks' team-leading third of the season and his first game winner of the year. Peterson earned his first collegiate assist and now has three points in the team's last three games.

Concordia had several other close chances to score in the first half including shots by Sam Gess, Julian Wilhelm and Austin Promersberger that were either blocked or stopped by the keeper.

The second half was played more in the middle of the field. After combining for 13 shots in the first 45 minutes the teams only had nine in the second period with most coming from farther out. The Cobbers had the only two shots on goal in the half as Peterson and Jacob Schmidt both but shots on frame.

The Cobbers ended the game with a 16-6 edge in total shots and a 5-0 advantage in shots on goal.

Peterson had a team-high four shots while Schmidt added three.

Concordia goalie Ben Glogoza didn't record an official save in the game but had to come out of the goal to make several stops on crosses and through balls.

BIG D EVEN BIGGER FENCE: The Cobbers have five wins on the year and four have come via the shutout. In Concordia's five wins CC has a goals against average of 0.20.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will have a week off to rest and get ready for their final conference home game. The Cobbers will host Bethel on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m.
