A Fitting Tribute

A Fitting Tribute

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/11/15)—An eerie twist of fate found Concordia scoring the game-winning goal in the second overtime with 9:11 left on the clock. The goal gave the Cobbers a 2-1 victory over Carthage (Wis.).

The game-winning tally went down in the scorebook as senior midfielder Dami Adegunle was able to beat the Red Men defense on the left wing and dribbled towards the near post. His crossing attempt ricocheted off of a Carthage defender and bounced into the back of the net.

The game was an intense, physical battle with six cards being handed out and 30 fouls called. The game went back-and-forth in the first half without a goal and then Concordia senior captain Nick Koerbitz poked home the opening goal of the game with 22:52 remaining in the second period. Sage Thornbrugh and Spencer Lancaster assisted on Koerbitz' first goal of the season.

The Cobbers would hold off the Red Men until the final minute of regulation. Carthage earned a throw-in deep in CC territory on the right wing. The subsequent throw-in was flicked into the middle of the goal area and a Red Men forward was able to push the ball into the goal before CC goalie Ben Glogoza could pounce on the pass.

Carthage outshot Concordia 3-1 in the first 10-minute overtime period but the best chance came off the foot of Adegunle. He found himself all alone in front of goal only seven yards from the net. After the ball caromed off several players the ball popped to Adegunle who fired a shot that hit the crossbar.

The win was the first of the year for Concordia. The Cobbers are now 1-2 with one final non-conference game before opening the MIAC season. Carthage falls for the first time since an opening-game loss at Colorado College. The Red Men are now 2-3 on the year.

MOMENT THAT MATTERED
Straight Red Card
One of the Carthage players received a straight red card in the 31st minute of the first half for a sliding tackle in the middle of the field. Before the sending off the teams had traded offensive attacks with the Red Men holding a 3-2 edge in shots. After the card, Carthage actually took the attack to the Cobbers and held a 3-0 advantage in shots in the final 14 minutes of the opening period.

STAT STUFF
Carthage wound up with an 18-4 edge in total shots for the game but the shots on goal were 5-3 in favor of the Red Men. Neither team was able to score on the 12 corner kicks in the game. Carthage had seven corners as compared to five for CC.

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS
The Cobbers have now had three of their four games this season determined by a 2-1 final score. Concordia righted the score line after dropping a 2-1 decision in the opener at Dakota Wesleyan and then the one-goal defeat at Simpson last Sunday.

QUOTABLE
"I only had one more minute in me. I'm glad we scored when we did because I was running on fumes." – Concordia junior defender Adam Kessler on his ability to keep playing after 100 minutes.

WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will have little time to rest on the thrill of their first win of the year.  The Cobbers will hit the road for an away game in Duluth. CC will square off against regional rival St. Scholastica on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.
