Elliot Bates joined the Cobber hockey staff in the summer of 2022 after Kirk Olimb was named head coach.

The Drayton, N.D. native was the head coach of the Thief River Falls Norskies (SIJHL) during the 2021-22 season.

Bates brings a wealth of junior hockey to the position. Before his stint at Thief River Falls, he was the head coach of the Bozeman Icedogs (NA3HL). Bates has also served as an assistant coach for the Granite City Lumberjacks (NA3HL) and the Yellowstone Quake (NA3HL).
