A Gretzky Game Winner

ST. PAUL, Minn. (02/19/22)---Senior All-American Tyler Bossert meet Wayne Gretzky. Bossert scored the game-winning goal in the Cobbers' 2-1 win at Hamline to up his career point total to the Great One's jersey number.

The victory in the first game of the final series of the regular season gives Concordia 10 MIAC wins this year. That marks the second straight season that the Cobbers have posted a double-digit conference win total. CC is now 10-4-1 in league play and 13-9-2 in all games.

Concordia lit up the scoreboard first when Mason Plante recorded his eighth goal of the year at the 4:30 mark of the opening period. The goal came on the power play and was set up by Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe and Hunter Bjorge.

The Cobbers have now scored at least one power play goal in three straight games, and are 9-3-1 on the season when they put up at least one PP goal in a game.

The teams would skate for the next 42:58 without putting another goal on the board. The scoreless drought was broken by the Pipers who tied the game at the 7:28 mark of the final period.

The game would stay deadlocked at 1-1 for only 2:54 before Bossert summoned The Great One. The Cobbers were staked to another power play when the Pipers were whistled for the rare delay of game penalty at 9:59.

It took Concordia exactly 23-seconds to get the game winner. Kevin Ness won the ensuing draw, Cole O'Connell grabbed the puck and gave it to Jaret Lalli who fed Bossert and, boom, hello Mr. Gretzky.

The goal was Bossert's 10th of the year which is tied for the team lead with O'Connell. It is his 27th career tally and gives him 32 points for the year. He leads the MIAC in points and assists (22).

The Cobbers only allowed two shots on goal in the final 9-minutes of play as they sealed the win with solid defensive zone coverage.

Concordia outshot Hamline 25-20 in a low shot-production game. The Cobbers were 2-for-5 on the power play while the CC penalty-kill unit held Hamline scoreless in their six PP chances.

Jackson Nelson stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced to pick up his 11th win of the year. The 11 wins are the most by a CC goalie since Jacob Stephan went 11-8-2 in 2019.

UP NEXT: Concordia will finish the regular season when they play at Hamline on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 6:30 p.m. A win or tie will give the Cobbers the No.2 seed for the upcoming conference tournament.
