Aaron Is Alright

MOORHEAD, Minn. (01/09/22)---Sophomore goalie Aaron Dickstein picked the perfect time to post his first collegiate win and record his first career shutout. Dickstein stopped all 18 shots he faced, including a penalty shot in the third period, to help Concordia blank Northland 3-0 in the final non-conference home game of the season.

Dickstein, who entered the game 0-3 in his three previous college appearances, did the majority of his work in the second period as Northland's best chances came in the middle frame of the game.

The victory pushes the Cobbers' overall record back above the .500 mark. Concordia is now 6-5-2, with all six wins coming at home.

The eventual game-winning goal came in the sixth minute of the first period. Senior defenseman Tanner Breidenbach started the goal-scoring rush by finding Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe in the middle of the ice just outside the CC blueline. Henkemeyer-Howe skated through the neutral zone to gain advantage on a 3-on-2 situation. He slid the puck to the right wing where Brady Tatro controlled the puck just inside the Lumberjacks' zone. Tatro went across the ice, just behind Henkemeyer-How, and found line mate Braden Costello crashing towards the goal. Costello settled the puck and fired a wrist shot just inside the left post, and just before the Northland goalie could make the move from the left post.

The goal at 5:05 was Costello's fifth of the season. Tatro and Henkemeyer-Howe were credited with the assists.

The game was a penalty-free contest with the only two penalties served coming in the final five minutes of the first period. CC had the opening power-play opportunity of the game at the 15:30 mark, but that was cut short when the Cobbers were whistled for a roughing call at 17:03.

Neither team scored on the man-advantage situations and the score was 1-0 heading into the first intermission.

The score line would stay at 1-0 until midway through the third period. The best chance of the middle frame came from Northland, who broke free on a 2-on-1 opportunity in the CC defensive zone but Dickstein was able to slide across the crease and make the highlight-reel save on the potential game-tying goal.

Concordia finally got the insurance marker they needed at the 12:15 mark of the final period. Defenseman Jaret Lalli was left open on the right point and fired a snap shot towards the goal. Tatro, who started the play on the right sideboards, circled towards the net and then redirected the shot from Lalli that went past the Northland goalie.

The goal was Tatro's sixth of the year which is second most for Concordia. Lalli picked up his second assist on the day and now has four helpers on the season.

The most dramatic moment of the game came in the final five minutes of regulation when a Concordia player was deemed to have slash a Lumberjack player on a breakaway. The referee awarded a penalty shot which Dickstein stopped by sliding to his right and kicking out his leg to make the save on the move from in close.

Northland (2-9-2) pulled its goalie at 17:35 and then senior All-American Tyler Bossert scored his second goal in as many days to put the game on ice. Bossert the fired the shot from just inside the red line after Shane Bernhardson had won the puck in the neutral zone.

Bossert now has 19 points on the season which leads the Cobbers and is tops in the MIAC.

Concordia finished the game by outshooting the Lumberjacks 40-18. It marks the third time this season that CC has had at least 40 shots on net in a game.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers will head out on the road for only the second time this season when they play at Wis.-Eau Claire on Jan. 14-15. The Blugolds are 4-8-0 this season and haven't played a game since the middle of December.
