Weekend Woes In Wisconsin

SUPERIOR, Wis. (1/11/20)--- Concordia gave up four straight goals in the first 23:14 at Wis.-Superior and lost 5-1 to the Yellowjackets in the second game of road weekend in Wisconsin.

The Cobbers allowed two goals in the first 7-minutes of the first period and then two in the first 4-minutes of the second frame as they went 0-1-1 on the Wisconsin weekend.

Concordia is now 4-7-2 on the season. Superior remains unbeaten in its last four games and ups its season record to 12-2-1. The Yellowjackets beat St. John's 6-2 on Friday as part of the MIAC-WIAC crossover.

The Cobbers posted the first two shots on goal in the game but then Superior turned the table, put up four consecutive shots and scored on the fifth at the 3:55 mark. CC almost tied the game less than a minute later but Superior was able to get the stop and then went up 2-0 at the 6:37 mark.     

The two goals led to a 1-sided period for the Yellowjackets as they outshot Concordia 19-5 in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Cobbers would hold a 23-21 advantage in shots on goal for the final 40 minutes of play but couldn't overcome the quick start by Superior.

The Yellowjackets duplicated their early 2-goal burst in the middle period. They doubled their lead with scores at 1:26 and 3:14.

Concordia was finally able to get on the board in the third period when senior Aaron Herdt scored a power play goal at 5:18. Senior defenseman Tanner Okeson picked up the assist on Herdt's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Superior would finish off the scoring in the final 30-seconds of play when they netted an empty-net goal at 19:40.

The Cobbers were outshot 40-28 for the 60 minutes of play. Herdt led the team five shots on target in the game and senior goalie Jacob Stephan made 35 saves.   

Concordia went 1-for-5 on the power play and held Superior scoreless in their four man-advantage situations.     

INSIDE STAT INFO: The Cobbers have only allowed two power play goals in four games since the start of the month of December. Concordia has held opponents to a 10.5% (2-for-19) success rate on the power play since November.

UP NEXT: The Cobbers will continue with their play against WIAC teams next weekend. Concordia will host No.3-ranked Wis.-Eau Claire on Friday and Saturday Jan. 17-18 at the Moorhead Sports Center. The Blugolds are 11-2-1 on the year and are coming off a 4-0 win at home against Lawrence on Saturday.
