Ties Met With Unfortunate Answers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/22/16)— Concordia rallied twice to tie Augsburg in the second and thirdperiods but the Auggies had an answer each time and the Cobbers lost 4-3 in the series opener.

A pair of third-period goals by Augsburg gave Concordia only their second conference loss of theseason. CC is now 5-2-0 in league play and 7-8-1 overall. Augsburg snaps a two-game losing skidand is now 10-6-0 overall and 6-1-0 in the MIAC. They are currently tied for first place in theconference standings.

Augsburg had all the momentum in the first three minutes of the game. The Auggies jumped allover the Cobbers and scored the opening goal of the contest at the 2:35 mark of the first period. Awell-timed timeout by Cobber head coach Chris Howe refocused the CC attack and the teamsplayed even for the rest of the period.

Concordia tied the game for the first time at 5:32 of the second period when Jon Grebosky one-timed a rebound past former Cobber goalie Jordyn Kaufer. Jeremy Johnson started the play byskating the puck the length of the ice and firing the initial shot off of Kaufer's right pad.

Augsburg countered midway through the second period and took a 2-1 lead on a breakaway fromthe CC blueline.

The Cobbers got level for the second time in the second minute of the third period. Freshman JakeZeleznikar fired a shot from the point that went just wide and caromed off the back boards.The puck kicked out in front of goal and the Auggie defenseman who was backchecking against aCobber attacker had the puck carom off his shin pad and past Kaufer into the net.

The tie game would last less than five minutes when the Auggies took the lead for the third time inthe game. A pass from the right corner was redirected past Concordia goalie Alex Reichle.

The Auggies then tacked on the eventual game-winning goal at 10:41.

Concordia finished off the scoring when sophomore defenseman Bryan Kronberger fire the pucktowards the goal from outside the Auggie blueline and the puck somehow managed to find theback of the net. Tucker Coborn was credited with the assist on Kronberger's third goal of theyear.

The Cobbers were outshot 38-27 in the game but the teams were nearly even (24-23) in the finaltqo periods of play. Grebosky had four shots to lead CC.

Reichle made 34 saves in the game while his former teammate Kaufer had 24 saves on the night. 

GREBOSKY KEEPS GRABBING
Sophomore Jon Grebosky got the Cobbers on the board in the second period. It was his team-leading ninth goal of the season and fifth in the last six games. Grebosky has now had at least onepoint in seven of the last eight games and leads the team with 19 points. That total is one pointshy of his 20-point freshman season.

2015-16 continues to be the season of scoring by underclassmen. All three of the Cobbers' goals on Friday were scored by either freshmen or sophomores. Concordia has scored 49 goals so far this season and 35 have been scored by either first or second-year players. That total is 71.4% of the team's scoring.

WHAT'S NEXT
Concordia will look to gain the split in the series and tie Augsburg in the league standings when the teams square off in the series finale on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 2 p.m. The Cobbers are 4-2-1 on Saturdays this season but 4-0-0 against MIAC foes on Saturday.
