Cobbers Define Rally In Come-From-Behind Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/01/25)---Webster's Dictionary defines the word "rally" as "to come together again to renew an effort." Concordia "rallied" in the final 5 minutes of their key MIAC contest with Hamline, erased a 9-point deficit and posted a 69-63 win.

The Cobbers trailed 62-53 with 5:00 left in the second half and then came together in a renewed effort to outscore the Pipers 16-1 down the stretch and earn the crucial conference win.

The come-from-behind victory brings Concordia to within a half-game of sixth place, and the final playoff spot, in the MIAC standings. CC is 4-6 in league play and 8-11 overall.  Hamline, thanks to losses by Carleton and Bethel on Saturday, remains in third place in the standings. They fall to 11-9 in all games and 7-4 in the conference.

The first 29 minutes of the game on Saturday went back-and-forth with neither team holding more than a 5-point lead. There were 14 lead changes and the game was tied on five occasions.

The game completely changed in the final 10 minutes of play as the Cobbers crept out to their biggest lead at 52-47. Concordia went cold from that point and the Pipers were able to score 15 of the next 16 points to take the 9-point lead at 62-53.

Fortunately for the Cobbers, they would be the team to make the final run and matched Hamline's 15-1 stretch with a 16-1 streak.

Junior Jackson Loge connected on a pair of shots from around the basket. Peyton Belka drained a 3-pointer and Rowan Nelson tied the game with an "and 1" at the 2:07 mark. He would give CC the lead for good when he went strong to the basket and finished off a layup at the 50-second mark.

Concordia iced the game by making four straight free throws in the final 10 seconds. Belka made the first two and Jacob Cook put the game to bed when he went 2-for-2 to bring the final score line to 69-63.

Nelson led all players with 20 points. He was 8-for-14 from the floor.

Loge started slow but finished with a flourish and picked up his 10th double-double of the year. He scored 15 points, including a power slam at the start of the second half, and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.

Belka and Cook gave the Cobbers four starters in double-digits for scoring. Both players finished with 10 points. Belka was 2-for-5 from distance while Cook went 6-for-6 from the foul line.

Junior Erik Hedstrom had his best game in maroon and gold. He was a 1-man force around the basket in the first half and came away with nine points and nine rebounds. Both totals are career highs for Hedstrom.

Next up for Concordia is a home date with St. Olaf on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
