Winners In The Final Minute

ST. PAUL, Minn. (2/22/20)---Concordia scored the final seven points of the game in the last 47-second of the second half to come away with a 67-62 win in the final contest of the 2020 season.

The Cobbers, who led for 34:30 of the first 36:00 of the game, trailed by two points at 62-60 with 1:00 left in the second half. Junior Bryden Urie hit a 3-point field goal with 47-seconds to play and then a pair of stellar defensive possessions and four straight free throws made by Tommy Schyma and David Birkeland sealed the victory for Concordia.

The Cobbers finish out the season with a 3-22 overall record and were 1-19 in MIAC play. Hamline closes the year with a 6-19 mark in all games and a 4-16 record in the league.

Schyma connected on the first field goal of the game in the Cobbers' opening possession and CC would never trail for the entire first half. The Pipers were able to tie the game on three occasion but each time Concordia responded and when Urie hit a jumper in the paint with 16:39 remaining, it set off a 10-4 run that gave CC a 6-point lead with 12:40 left in the opening period.

Concordia pushed the lead to as many as 11 points in the half and went into the locker room with a 9-point lead at 38-29. The Cobbers stayed out in front until the 4-minute mark when Hamline went on a 9-1 run to take their first lead of the game at 56-55. The teams would then go back-and-forth until the decisive final 47-seconds of play.

The stat lines for both teams were similar. Concordia shot 54.2% (26-for-48) from the floor and 26.7% (4-for-15) from outside the arc as compare to 47.2% (25-for-53) from the floor and 33.3% (5-for-15) from 3-point range for Hamline.

The Cobbers held a 28-26 edge in rebounds while the Pipers had a slim 30-28 advantage in points in the paint.

Urie had a team highs in points and rebounds. He finished with 18 points and seven boards. Senior John Reiten went 5-for-6 from the floor and had 10 points while Jacob Fredrickson added 12 points. David Birkeland came off the bench to haul down six rebounds and also had six points.

DOUBLE-DIGIT DUO: John Reiten finished his college career by scoring in double figures in his last two games. He had had nine game with at least 10 points on the season. Bryden Urie scored in double-digits in four of the last six games and finished the year with a team-best 13 games with at least 10 points.
