Scheels Athletes Of The Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/27/16)—Consistency was the key for this week’s Scheels Cobber Athletes of the Week. Both Cade Montplaisir and Emily Friedrich put up consistent numbers on three occasions during the week to earn this week’s award.

Montplaisir posted three rounds in the 70’s at the always-tough Twin Cities Classic for the Cobber men’s golf team and finished in the Top 15 for the second straight week. Friedrich had 37 kills and 32 digs in the Concordia volleyball team’s three matches during last week.

Scheels is once again pleased to sponsor the Cobber Athletes of the Week award.  Each week the Concordia sports information department will choose a deserving Cobber male and female athlete of the week.

MEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
CADE MONTPLAISIR – Sr., Mesa, Ariz. /Dobson HS
Montplaisir started the year slowly but has really turned his game up a notch over the past two tournaments. This week he fired three straight rounds in the 70‘s at the Twin Cities Classic and finished in a tie for 12th place. Montplaisir opened with a 74 on Saturday and then carded a 75 on Sunday. His 76 on Monday was one of the Top 7 rounds in the entire tournament field of 85. Montplaisir finished with a three-day total of 225 which was good for a tie for 12th place.

Montplaisir's final total of 225 is the exact same score he posted last season at the meet.

Montplaisir has now led the Cobbers in scoring for the last three events and he has been in the Top 2 of the team in all four meets this year.  He has now recorded six straight rounds in the 70's. He has also been in the Top 15 of the individual standings in two straight meets. Montplaisir leads the team in scoring in 2016 with a 76.2 average.

WOMEN’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
EMILY FRIEDRICH, So., Garfield, Minn./Brandon-Evansville HS
Friedrich was at her best when her team needed her most. After the Cobbers lost to their fifth straight match on Wednesday against Augsburg, Friedrich responded with team-high kill totals in the next two matches to help Concordia beat Minn.-Morris 3-2 (18-25, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22, 15-13) on Friday and then Hamline 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) on Saturday.

On Friday against the Cougars, Friedrich finished with a team-high 18 kills, hit .241 and recorded 18 digs. She backed up that double-double performance by coming away with a team-high 11 winners and a pair of blocks against the Pipers on the very next day.

Friedrich leads the team in kills this season with 149. That total is three times as many as she had in her first year as a Cobber in 2015. Friedrich has recorded double-digit kill totals in seven of the team’s 13 matches and is hitting .155 for the year. She is also third on the team in digs with 112 and was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Nike/Eastbay Classic hosted by Wis.-Eau Claire.
