Berg & Kostelecky Earn MIAC Honors

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/02/17)---For the second time in 2017 Concordia had a pair of players earn MIAC Player of the Week honors in the same week.

Juniors Alex Berg and Tony Kostelecky were recognized by the league office for their outstanding play in helping the Cobbers beat Gustavus 27-17 in the annual Homecoming game.

Both players earn the conference honor for the first time this season and they follow in the steps of teammates Dallas Raftevold and Chad Johnson who earned the weekly award after Concordia defeated Wis.-Whitewater on Sept. 9.

Berg earns his second career MIAC Player of the Week honor. He was also recognized last year on Oct. 3 after the Cobbers also beat Gustavus.

Berg was the leader of the Concordia defense which held the MIAC-leading Gustavus passing attack to only 183 yards. It marked the first time all season that Gustavus has been held under 290 passing yards.

Berg, a D3football.com preseason All-American, finished with a team-high 11 tackles including 1.0 sacks and another quarterback hurry. The sack came at a critical time in the game at the end of the third quarter with Concordia clinging to a 17-14 lead and Gustavus driving inside the Cobber red zone at the CC 12-yard line.

Berg now has 17 solo tackles and 14 assisted tackles for 31 total tackles on the year. He leads the team in solo tackles and quarterback hurries.

Kostelecky earns his first-ever MIAC honor after continuing his streak of not missing a field goal or extra point attempt. He was perfect in five kicks in the Cobber's win over previously conference unbeaten Gustavus.

Kostelecky went 2-for-2 in field goal attempts, connecting on tries of 29 yards and 39 yards into a wind that was gusting up to 25 mph. He was also 3-for-3 on extra pointattempts.

Kostelecky has not missed an extra point or field goal attempt since the second week of the season and during that stretch he is 9-for-9 in PATs and 4-for-4 in field goal tries.

Kostelecky is second in the MIAC in field goals made this season (4) and is fourth in extra point field goal percentage.

Berg and Kostelecky will look to continue their successful ways when they Cobbers take on No.6-ranked St. Thomas on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 1:10 p.m. in St. Paul.
