AUBURNDALE, Fla. (3/04/20)--- Concordia ran into a red-hot Mitchell (Conn.) team and dropped an 11-1 decision in the Cobbers' fifth game in Florida.
The Mariners, who won 34 games last season and were picked to win the NECC championship in the preseason coaches' poll, were buoyed by a pair of big-run innings. Mitchell scored five runs in the second inning and then four more in the fifth to earn the win.
Concordia was outhit in the game 9-6. Mitchell also held a 4-2 edge in extra-base hits in the 7-inning game.
The offensive highlight for the Cobbers came in the fifth inning when junior Mason Penske pounded a shot over the right field fence to record the first home run of hos college career. Penske's long ball would be the only run production for CC in the game.
Concordia also put up one of their other two scoring threats after Penske's HR in the fifth. Sean McGuire laced a 1-out triple to right field but was unable to cross the plate after a pair of strikeouts closed out the inning.
The only other threat for Concordia came in the third inning when McGuire led off with a single and Max Boran followed it with a base knock of his own to center field. Unfortunately, the Cobbers were done in by a 1-out line drive to second base which turned into a 4-6 double play.
McGuire was the lone Cobber with more than one hit in the game. He went 2-for-2 with his third career triple. He has now had one 3-bagger in each of his first three seasons in maroon and gold.
Penske, Boran, Matt Gruber and Canaan Fagerland had the other base hits for CC.
The Cobbers used three pitchers in the game. Dylan Olsonawski got the start and pitched the first 2.0 innings. Olsonawski was followed by freshman Gabe Duncan and junior Kody Lindgren both of whom were making their 2020 season debuts. Duncan pitched 3.0 innings and struck out four while Lindgren followed with a scoreless sixth inning.
UP NEXT: Concordia will return to doubleheader action on Thursday, Mar. 5 when they play Gwynedd Mercy (Pa.) at 8:15 a.m. (cst) and Emerson (Mass.) at 11:45 a.m. Both games will be played at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale, Fla.
