Christensen Named Pitcher of the Week

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/8/19)---Concordia senior Cole Christensen used a 2-win, 23-strikeout performance to earn MIAC Pitcher of the Week honors.

Christensen earns the award for the first time in his career and he becomes the second Cobber layer to earn MIAC weekly honors this year. Fellow senior Nate Hoeft was named the MIAC Player of the Week on Mar. 11 after .525 in the team's first eight games in Florida.

Christensen was responsible for two of the team's three wins over the week. He started his MIAC Pitcher of the Week campaign by throwing 8.0 shutout innings against Augsburg. He finished it off with a 1-run performance against Macalester on Saturday.

Christensen struck out 12 and allowed only four hits against the Auggies. He only allowed one runner to get past second base and that came with two outs in the third frame. Christensen retired nine of the final 11 batters her faced. His 12 strikeouts were a career high.

On Saturday in St. Paul against the Scots, Christensen fanned 11 more batters and didn't allow a runner on base until there were two outs in the third inning.

Christensen's 23 strikeouts on the week pushed his season total to 42 on the year which currently leads the MIAC. His total of 42 Ks is seven more than his previous single-season high. He now has 123 strikeouts for his career.

Christensen has struck out at least 10 batters in three of his five starts this season after not posting a double-digit strikeout total in his first three years. He leads the Cobbers in wins with three and has a 2.53 earned run average which is third on the team among starters.

The Cobbers will look to continue their recent success when they host Hamline in the home opener on Tuesday, Apr. 9 at 2 p.m.
