Syverson Serves Up Sunday Split

MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/29/18)---A pitching gem from Ty Syverson and a 5-run sixth inning led to Concordia's second split of the weekend.

The Cobbers used the arm of Syverson to post a 70-minute, 1-0 win over St. Mary's in the opener. The Cardinals then broke open a 3-3 tie with five runs in the sixth inning of Game 2 to claim an 8-3 win.

Concordia has now split four of its last six conference twinbills. The Cobbers are now 6-6 in league play and holding on to the sixth, and final, playoff spot in the conference standings. CC is now 14-15 overall. The loss in the opener knocks St. Mary's out of sole possession of first place. SMU is now in a 3-way at the top with a 9-3 mark. The Cardinals are 15-12 in all games.

Syverson outdueled St. Mary's freshman ace James Green. Both pitchers went the full seven innings and both allowed four hits. Syverson worked out of a first-and-second jame with no out in the first frame and then only allowed two more hits in the final six innings of play.

Syverson got better as the game went farther and farther. He gave up a single and a walk to start the third and then finished the seven innings by retiring the final 15 batters he faced.

The Cobbers got the only run they would need in the second inning when they put together a 2-out rally. Nate Leintz singled to right center to start the rally. He reached third base on an error and the scored when Brett Swanson beat out an infield single.

Concordia had four different players with a single hit in the opener. Besides Leintz and Swanson, Turner Storm and Nate Sillerud also came away with base knocks.

The Cobbers fell behind early in the finale as they allowed two runs in the first and then a single score in the second.

CC started the comeback trail in the third. Storm and Nate Hoeft recorded doubles in a span of three batters to get Concordia within one. Hoeft hammered a 2-out, 2-bagger to center field which scored Storm.

Concordia tied the game in the fourth inning when they scored twice on a single hit. Once again it was a double that made the difference. Storm turned on a pitch and doubled down the left field line which scored Swanson and Jack Hiedeman.

The Cardinals then won the game in the sixth with five runs on five hits.

The Cobbers used four different pitchers in the nightcap. Freshman Toby Sayles made his first collegiate and lasted the first 3.0 innings. He allowed one earned run on three hits and fanned two.

WHAT'S NEXT: The Cobbers will close out the home portion of their 2018 schedule when they host Bethel on Tuesday, May 2 at 1 p.m. The Royals are 10-4 in the MIAC and swept St. Olaf on Sunday. BU split with St. Mary's on Saturday.
