Carlson & Sandahl Earn All-MIAC Honors
MOORHEAD, Minn. (5/13/16)—A pair of seniors earned conference accolades after helping Concordia to a fifth-place finish in the final MIAC standings.
Tim Carlson and Alex Sandahl were both named to the MIAC All-Conference Team while Carlson was the team's selection for the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.
It is the first time for both players to earn conference postseason honors.
Carlson and Sandahl helped the Cobbers to an 11-9 conference record in 2016. The 11 league wins marked the third time in the past four years that CC has won at least 11 games in MIAC play. The Cobbers also won 21 overall games which was the second consecutive year for Concordia to record at least 20 overall victories.
Carlson, the team's designated hitter, hit .347 in 20 conference games. His 26 hits in league play led the team. He also led the team in doubles (8) and tied for the team lead in home runs (3) in conference play. Carlson had at least one hit in 15 of the 20 conference games and came away with seven multiple-hit games against MIAC pitchers.
Carlson was named the MIAC Player of the Week on Apr. 4 after hitting .462 and having a 1.30 slugging percentage in Concordia's three games during the week.
In addition to his success at the plate Carlson also took to the mound for the first time in his four years at Concordia. Carlson had a 1.12 earned run average in his four conference appearances. He pitched 8.0 innings, struck out six and opposing hitters only batted .233.
Carlson had a career year at the plate as he posted career highs in almost every statistical category. He finished his career with 134 hits which is tied for 10th most in school history. He also had 38 career doubles which is second on the school's all-time list.
Sandahl quietly led the team in hitting in league games. He posted a final average of .396 in the 17 conference games he appeared in. That mark was 11th best in the league. Sandahl was also in the top 11 of the league in on-base-percentage, slugging percentage and triples. He had a .473 on-base percentage which was 10th in the MIAC and his .688 slugging percentage in league play was seventh best.
One of the statistical areas where Sandahl stood out in 2016 was his ability to leg doubles into triples. Sandahl had five triples in all games and three in conference play. His three three-baggers were good for third in the MIAC.
Like Carlson, Sandahl had a career year in 2016. He had 71 more at bats than any other year he played in maroon and gold. His 33 hits, 18 runs, 23 RBI and five triples were all career highs by a wide margin.
