Late First Set Swings Match Against Bethel

MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/19/22)—The final seven points of the opening set proved to be the deciding factor in the Cobbers' conference match with Bethel. Concordia led 24-21 and had three set points to go up 1-0, but then the Royals won six of the next seven points to claim a 27-25 victory. The Cobbers were never able to get more than a 1-point lead for the remainder of the match and lost 3-0 (27-25, 25-21, 25-18).

Concordia (2-8, 0-2 MIAC) led 11-10 in the second set, but then Bethel took a 16-12 lead before CC was able to tie the set at 20-20. The Royals won five of the next six points to claim a 25-21 win. The Cobbers never led in the third set as they fell for the fourth straight match.

Bethel (8-4, 1-0 MIAC) held a slight 39-36 edge in kills for the match, but they were over 100 points better in attack percentage. The Cobbers hit .133 for the first set, but then finished the night with a .070 mark, while Bethel hit above .100 in all three sets and finished at .184.

The Cobbers had a pair of players with double-digit kill totals. Anna Brakke posted a match-high 11 kills and added a team-high 11 digs. It's the second time in the last three matches she has recorded a double-double in kills and digs.

Brook Carney came through with a season-high 10 kills and hit .152. She also had three digs and two blocks. She consistently hammered balls to the floor from her spot on the left side of the net.

Kendra Wiggs had eight kills and hit .350. She also had three blocks.

Madison Kisch and Hannah Keil also had three blocks on the night.

Kaia Lill came through with 29 assists.

The Cobbers had nine players with at least two digs as they continue to step up their play on the defensive end.

UP NEXT: Concordia will participate in its final invitational of the year on the weekend. The Cobbers will travel to Iowa to compete in the Wartbug Invite on Sept. 23-24.
