A Second Weekend Split

SUPERIOR, Wis. (9/11/21)---For the second straight weekend, Concordia split their four matches at a multi-team tournament. Unlike the opening weekend where the Cobbers dropped a pair of matches on the first day and then swept the two matches on Saturday, Concordia split their matches on each day of the Wis.-Superior Stinger Invite and finished with a 2-2 record.

The Cobbers opened the weekend by falling 3-0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-20) to Neb. Wesleyan and then came back to sweep Bethany Lutheran 25-21, 25-12, 25-20. Saturday produced the same outcome storyline. CC lost 3-2 (18-25, 25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 10-15) to host Wis.-Superior in the first match of the day, and then rebounded to cruise past Northland 25-17, 25-20, 25-19.

The 2-2 record over the weekend moves the Cobbers season mark to 4-5.

Concordia had a pair of players selected to the All-Tournament Team. Senior Anna Brakke and freshman Hannah Keil both earned the post tournament award.

Brakke led the Cobbers with 54 kills and 64 digs in the four matches. She hit .212 and also recorded three service aces.

Keil had 32 winners to go along with 23 digs and six blocks.

Senior Kendra Wiggs added 35 kills and five blocks, while Kenzie Urbanec came through with a team-high 101 assists and Madison Kisch led CC with seven blocks.

Concordia's top hitting match came against Northland in the weekend finale when they hit .213 and had 46 kills. Brakke led all players with 13 kills and 13 digs. It was her fourth double-double of the weekend and fifth straight match where she had at least 10 kills and 10 digs.

Brakke now has a team-high 98 kills for the season. That total is fourth best in the MIAC this season. She also upped her season dig total to 125 which is tied for second most in the conference.

The Cobbers top kill total came in the 5-set heartbreaker against Wis.-Superior. Concordia had a season-high 57 winners against the Yellowjackets and recorded 103 digs – another season-high total.

Brakke went for 20 kills and 22 digs in that match. The Cobbers also had three other players with a double-digit kill total against Superior. Keil put up 12 kills, and Wiggs and Brook Carney both had 10 winners.

Urbanec had a career-high 41 assists and now has 174 in her first collegiate season. That is the sixth most in the MIAC this year.

UP NEXT: Concordia will finally get the chance to play in the friendly confines of Memorial Auditorium. The Cobbers will host their home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
