Cobbers Host Doubleheader

MOORHEAD, Minn. (3/27/21)---Concordia dropped a pair of matches against MIAC opponents on Saturday in a rare, same-day doubleheader.

The Cobbers fell 3-0 (25-13, 27-25, 25-19) against Augsburg in the opener which was a conference match and then fell 3-1 (25-21, 25-15, 21-25, 25-15) to St. Mary's in a contest that was played as a non-conference match.

Against the Auggies, Concordia led 23-19 in the second set, but then gave up eight of the final 10 points and lost 27-25. The third set was tied at 16-16 before Augsburg went on a 9-3 run to finish off the match.

Concordia earned its first set win of the season in the match against the Cardinals. The Cobbers never trailed in the third set and won 25-21. CC led by a single point at 18-17 and then finished the set on a 7-4 streak.

The Cobbers got stronger at the net as they day went along. CC hit .081 in the first match against Augsburg and then had a .112 attack percentage versus St. Mary's. Concordia's Top 2 set marks came against the Cardinals. CC hit .343 in their third-set win and had a .229 mark in the opening set.

Bailey Gronner and Brook Carney both had seven kills against the Auggies to lead the team. Gronner also posted a team-best .261 hitting percentage. Freshman Chloe Markovic had 11 digs and Julia Bogart added eight. Jill Klaphake and Lexi Turn combined for 25 assists with Klaphake having 13 and Turn 12. Klaphake also had two service aces. Anna Brakke had six winners and two aces.

Freshman Mariah Ahrndt and junior Kendra Wiggs came away with the most kills by a Cobber in the second game. Both players finished with nine winners. Wiggs had a team-high .300 attack mark and Ahrndt hit .194. Turn led the senior setting duo with 17 assists as compared to 12 for Klaphake. Markovic added 15 digs to her team-leading total and Klaphake had a season-high 10. Winnie Selekwa was strong at the net on defense in the second match. She came away with a season-high four blocks.

UP NEXT: Concordia will have almost a 2-week break before returning to action when they play at Hamline on Thursday, Apr. 8 at 7 p.m.
