Cobbers Fall In Four
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/30/19)---Concordia looked like they were going to tie their key MIAC match-up with Bethel at 2-2 after they took a 16-14 lead and had the momentum in the set but a 10-3 finishing run by the Royals sent the Cobbers to a 3-1 (25-17, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23) loss in Moorhead.
Concordia started slow dropping the first set 25-17 and then falling 25-19 in the second. The Cobbers rallied in the third by opening the bout with a 4-0 run and then jumping to an 18-13 lead. The Royals would close the gap to 24-22 before a service error allowed Concordia to take the set 25-22.
Both teams had their hitting shoes on for the penultimate conference regular season match of the year. The Cobbers hit .279 for the four sets but were outdone by Bethel who posted a .367 mark.
Senior Brianna Carney had a team-high .444 hitting percentage in the final match in Memorial Auditorium of her career. She also had five kills on the night.
Freshman Brook Carney led the Cobbers with 13 kills and hit .440. Bailey Gronner was the other member of the CC front line who had more than 10 winners in the match. She hit .321 and came away with 11 kills and four blocks.
Junior Jill Klaphake had 26 assists and fellow junior Casey Coste recorded 13 digs. Kendra Wiggs led the Concordia defense as she had four blocks.
UP NEXT: Concordia will finish off the 2019 season when they play at St. Benedict on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. The Bennies are 21-4 in all matches and 7-3 in the MIAC. They have won four of their past five matches but are coming off a 3-0 loss at St. Thomas on Wednesday.
