Warm-Up Suit Magic Wins 2nd Straight

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/26/19)----There truly is power in the old school warm-up suits. For the second straight match the Cobber coaching staff wore the same retro warm-ups and for the second straight match Concordia posted a victory over an MIAC opponent.

On Friday the Cobbers rallied to beat Gustavus 3-1 and on Saturday Concordia blanked Carleton 25-11, 25-19, 25-12.

The 42 points allowed in the match is the fewest given up by the Cobbers this season.

The Cobbers trailed briefly at the start of the second and third sets but then ran away from the Knights as they jumped into a tie for the sixth, and final, playoff spot in the MIAC standings. CC is now 4-5 in conference play and 7-17 overall. Carleton falls to 6-18 overall and 2-7 in the league.

While the warm-up suit mojo might just be for show, Concordia used their front-line offense and defense to provide the real the real magic in the match. The Cobbers finished with an attack percentage of .301 and had eight blocks to record their third sweep of the season. The .301 attack rate marks back-to-back matches that CC has hit at least .300 – and not surprisingly they have won each match.

Not only did the coaching staff get quality out of their players they were also able to use quantity as head coach Faith Dooley used 18 players in the match.

Sophomore Anna Brakke had a match-high 11 kills against the Knights. She hit .208 and also had eight digs. Freshman Brook Carney hit .353 and had eight winners while Kendra Wiggs posted a team-best .444 attack percentage and recorded five kills.

Jill Klaphake and Lexi Turn combined for 31 assists on the night and Casey Coste and Gabby DeBoer recorded 25 digs between the two liberos. Brianna Carney and Bailey Gronner both had three blocks on the day.

UP NEXT: Concordia will host a pivotal MIAC match-up on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. when they square off against Bethel. The Royals are one of two teams who are tied with the Cobbers in the standings for sixth place. Bethel is 4-5 in the MIAC and 15-10 overall and have dropped five straight matches.
