Errors Prove Costly For Improved Cobbers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/22/19)---Concordia continued to show signs of improvement but at the same time was hampered by their ability to play consistently over the course of a match.

The Cobbers lost 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-21) to Mayville State in a match that was the second half of a home-and-home series between the two teams. CC lost to the Comets by an identical score at the start of September but in that match they scored 14 fewer points and never threatened the NAIS scholarship school.

Concordia pushed Mayville State in all three sets on Tuesday but in the end it was the frequency of errors that cost the Cobbers. CC committed 44 errors in the match and was close in all three sets.

The Cobbers trailed by a single point at 20-19 in the first set before they made a pair of attack errors and were outscored 5-3 down the stretch.

Concordia chased the second set from the start but got to within three points at 18-15 before five attack errors and a service error sent them to a 25-19 loss.

The third set played out much like the first set with the Comets getting out to a 12-7 lead. Concordia then closed the gap to a single point at 18-7 and then Mayville went on a 7-4 run to close out the match.

The Cobbers hit .045 for the match and had a set-high .104 attack percentage in the first set. Mayville also hit their top attack mark in the opener with a .171 percentage. They finished the match with a .130 hitting rate.

The Comets held a slim 35-34 edge in total kills for the match. Mayville had a 71-60 advantage in digs while the CC frontline did one better than their counterparts and came away with a 6-5 edge in blocks.

Sophomore Anna Brakke had a team-high nine kills and also added 12 digs. She hit .081 for the match.

Senior Brianna Carney had a team-best .214 hitting percentage. She also had three blocks. Brook Carney also had three blocks to go along with a pair of kills and two digs.

Kendra Wiggs also had three blocks at the front line and came away with eight kills.

Junior Casey Coste put up a season-high 26 digs. She now has 215 digs for the year and 703 in her CC career.

Lexi Turn led the Cobber offense with 15 assists and now has 999 helpers in her college career.

UP NEXT: Concordia will host the annual MIAC doubleheader weekend. The Cobbers will face Gustavus on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. and then turn around square off against Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m.
