Carney & Mercil Earn MIAC Awards

MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/02/16)—Concordia freshman Brianna Carney and senior Mandy Mercil received MIAC postseason recognition as part of the annual all-conference awards.

Carney was the team's lone representative to the MIAC All-Conference Team while Mercil was the team's choice for the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.

The two players helped Concordia earn a spot in the MIAC playoffs for the 15th time in program history. The Cobbers finished the year with a 5-6 mark in conference play and a 9-18 overall record.

Carney becomes the first Concordia freshman to earn MIAC postseason honors since 2012 when Olivia Wangensteen was named to the MIAC All-Conference Team.

Carney was a consistent force at the net all season long. She led the team in kills and blocks and was second in attack percentage in Concordia's 11 MIAC matches in 2016. Carney finished the year with 115 kills and 27 blocks and hit .224 against league opponents.

Carney had at least 11 kills in seven of the 11 league matches in 2016. Her high-water mark came against Macalester on Sept. 15 when she had 18 kills. Carney also had at least 2.0 blocks in seven matches and had a season-high 6.0 blocks against Bethel on Oct. 6. Her top attack match came against St. Olaf where she hit .520 and finished with 15 kills in 25 total attack chances.

Mercil moved out of her role as one of the team's two setters and was the most versatile of the Cobber players in 2016. She was second on the team in digs in league play. Mercil was also second in blocks, second in assists, third in service aces and fifth in kills.

Mercil finished the year with 153 digs, 13 blocks, five service aces, 40 assists and 61 kills in the conference season.

Mercil ended her four years in maroon and gold with 1,780 assists, 952 digs, 191 kills and 77 service aces.
