Momentum Builder

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/12/16)—A 3-1 streak at the end of the first set gave Concordia the momentum in its match with St. Catherine and propelled the Cobbers to a 25-23, 25-17, 25-21 sweep over the Wildcats.

The opening set was tied at 22-22 before a St. Catherine set error and then two kills from Emily Friedrich gave the Cobbers the two-point win. Concordia would only trail briefly at the start of the second set before seizing control and cruising to the three-set sweep.

The win is the second in three matches for the Cobbers and ups their overall record to 8-10 on the year. CC is now 4-3 in conference play and tied for fifth place in the league standings. The Wildcats fall to 11-13 in all matches and 0-7 in the MIAC.

The Cobbers hit at least .125 in all three sets and finished with an attacking percentage of .184. On the other side of the net the Concordia defense held the Wildcats under a .090 attack percentage for the first two sets and St. Catherine finished with a .090 mark for the match.

Concordia had 13 more kills and 20 more digs in the match as the CC defense made great plays on would-be winners and turned them into solid passing attacks.

Junior Stephanie Baker led all players with 28 digs. She was one of four CC players with at least 10 digs in the game and all nine players who stepped on the court for Concordia came away with at least one dig.

Jena Klaphake added 14 digs and a match-high 35 assists. Freshman Betsy Asp recorded  11 digs.

Brianna Carney led all attackers with 13 kills and hit a match-high .407. She also came away with two blocks. Carney has now recorded a double-digit kill total in four of the past six matches.

DOUBLE DIGIT DIVA: Brianna Carney has posted at least 10 kills in eight matches this season and CC is 7-1 in those matches.

DOUBLE DOUBLE DIVA: Senior Mandy Mercil posted the only double-double of the match as she had 12 digs and 10 kills. Mercil now has two double-doubles in MIAC play and the Cobbers are 2-0 in those matches.

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will hop on a plane for its longest road trip of the season. The Cobbers will take flight to Colorado to take part in the Colorado College Pikes Peak Challenge. Concordia will play Luther and Millikin on Friday, Oct. 14 and then Eastern and host Colorado College on Saturday, Oct. 15.
