A Four-Match Sprint For The Playoffs

MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/15/14)—Concordia ran into No.10-ranked St. Thomas and lost 25-10, 25-15, 25-18 on Wednesday. The loss puts the Cobbers in an uphill battle to earn a spot in the MIAC postseason.

Concordia is now 10-10 overall but 3-4 in conference play and tied for eighth place in the MIAC standings. The top six teams make the league playoffs and Cobbers now have four conference matches remaining to climb two spots in the standings.

St. Thomas has now won 14 of its last 15 matches and has now won 14 straight matches over conference opponents. The Tommies are now 18-5 in all matches and a perfect 6-0 in league play.

The Cobbers never led in the first set and had their best opportunity for a win in the second set when they held a 9-7 lead. St. Thomas then won the next three points and seven of the next nine to take a 14-11 lead. CC would never be able to get closer than two points and wound up losing 25-15.


Concordia vs. St. Thomas Match Highlights




The Cobbers hit .039 for the match and had 16 fewer kills in the match than the Tommies. Concordia's best hitting set came in the second when they recorded a .111 attack percentage.

Senior Kelly Reed was the only Cobber player with more than three kills in the match. She finished with seven winners, hit .250 and had the only block in the match for CC.

Jena Klaphake had a team-high 12 assists while Alyssa Schmidt had 12 digs.

Concordia will have a nine-day break before returning to action on Friday, Oct. 24 when they play at Gustavus. The match against the Gusties will start the four-match stretch run for the playoffs.
