Another .500 Day Finishes Off The UW-Eau Claire Invite

EAU CLAIRE, Wis.  (9/20/14)— Senior Kelly Reed earned her second straight All-Tournament Team honor as she helped Concordia post its second straight loss-win day at the Wis-Eau Claire Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament.

A day after dropping their opening match to St. Nobert and then coming back to beat Wisconsin Lutheran, the Cobbers fell to host Wis.-Eau Claire 3-0 then swept Carroll (Wis.) 3-0. The two wins and two losses over the weekend push CC's overall record to 6-7 on the year.

Reed, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team at the Bethel Invitational on Sept. 5-6, finished the Eau Claire tournament with a team-high 37 kills for the four matches and had an attack percentage of .309. She had 10-kill matches against St. Norbert and Eau Claire and added nine winners against Wis. Lutheran and eight vs. Carroll. Reed had her best hitting match against St. Norbert when she hit .500.

Concordia opened Saturday by never getting on track defensively against the Blugolds and lost three straight (25-18, 25-14, 25-22). The Cobbers allowed Eau Claire to hit over .345 in all three sets and have a non-serve winning percentage of over 60% in all three sets.

Reed led the team with her 10 winners. Fellow junior Anna Skow-Anderson was the only other CC player with more than four kills. She came away with seven kills. Mandy Mercil had 20 assists and Alyssa Schmidt added 13 digs.

It was a complete 180-degree turn against Carroll in the second match of Day 2. The Cobbers limited the Pioneers to a minus-.036 attack percentage in the first set and a mere .096 mark for the entire match. Concordia set the tone for the final match of the tourney by winning 25-15. They backed that win up with set victories of 25-22 and 25-21.

Freshman Korbyn Ross had a career-high 11 kills and came away with a .391 attack percentage off of 23 total attack attempts. She also had 13 digs to post her first collegiate double-double. It was all freshmen on the front line for the Cobbers as fellow first-year attacker Vanessa Johnson had nine kills and hit .259. It is the eighth match this season she has had at least nine winners in a match.

Schmidt had 29 digs against Carroll and finished the tourney with 56 digs. Jena Klaphake had 20 assists to pace the Concordia offense.

The Cobbers will finally get a chance to play in front of their home fans when they host their 2014 home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. against Hamline.
