Skow-Anderson's Season-High Kill Total Not Enough

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (9/18/14)— Concordia dropped a 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20) decision in their MIAC opener at No.24-ranked Augsburg on Thursday. Anna Skow-Anderson had a season-high 14 kills to lead the Cobbers but it wasn't enough as CC had their three-match win streak come to a halt.

All three of the set losses for the Cobbers against the nationally ranked Auggies came after each set was tied late in the competition. Skow-Anderson tied the opening set at 17-17 with a kill but then an 8-3 run gave Augsburg a 1-0 lead.

The Cobbers turned the tables in the second set by winning a pair of points after the score was tied 23-23. Kills by Kynndyl Ross and Skow-Anderson pushed the match even at one set a piece.

The experience seeking Cobbers dropped the third set by giving up four of the final five points after the set was tied at 21-21. Concordia then stumbled again down the stretch in fourth set after tying the bout at 18-18.

The Cobbers hit over .150 as a team in the second and third sets but were under.100 in the opener and the fourth set. The Auggies hit above .200 for the first three sets and were able to come up with a side-out percentage of over 60% in all three of their set wins.

The 14 winners for Skow-Anderson is one shy of her career kill total for a single match. She had 15 kills last season against Puget Sound. Skow-Anderson hit .146 and had a team-high 48 total attack chances. She also finished with three blocks on the night.

Heather Beaner had a match-high .308 attack percentage for Concordia. She finished with 12 kills. It is the second time this season that she has posted a double-digit kill total.

Concordia had several other players post significant numbers on the scoresheet. Jena Klaphake had a team-high 24 assists while Alyssa Schmidt had 23 digs and Kathleen Lippert recorded a team-high five blocks in the four sets.

The Cobbers will stay on the road and head east to participate in the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament hosted by Wis.-Eau Claire. CC will play St. Norbert and Wisconsin Lutheran on Friday, Sept. 19 and then Carroll and host Eau Claire on Saturday, Sept. 20.
